Thinking positive thoughts isn’t just about being happy — it can mean all the difference in your journey to true health. Time and time again, positive thinking has generated powerful results when it comes to making strides toward a healthy lifestyle. When coupled with realistic goals and a great support system, positivity impacts nearly all aspects of your long-term health.
When I tell patients that we are going to make changes in many areas of their lives, this tends to depress some of them. Making drastic changes can seem intimidating, and the road ahead will most certainly hold obstacles.
I know sometimes it’s much easier to just give up and hope for the best. I understand because I’ve been there as that patient. But that’s not what we’re all about.
Positive thinking directly affects how we cope with stressors, especially change. Once we have that positive attitude and we know what we’re trying to achieve, the obstacles in front of us suddenly disappear; there are only challenges that we will eventually overcome.
I’ve seen it with some of my beloved patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, yet have remained positive and have absolutely sailed through their treatment to become cancer-free. The same applies to my patients who needed to lose weight and needed to change their entire lifestyle.
A positive mindset coupled with a realistic road map doesn’t allow for any disappointment. Setting realistic goals and timelines will help you to remain positive as you achieve a more sustainable, healthy lifestyle.
Education and knowledge are power. With my patients, I am not only their doctor, I am their coach — the coach who teaches them what needs to be done in order to achieve wellness.
That is the concept that I take into the exam room; we’re forming a team where I guide you through what needs to be done in order to achieve their goals. When we work together, keep the lines of communication open, and tackle each problem with a positive mindset, there’s really nothing we can’t achieve.
Perhaps the most important aspect of maintaining a positive mindset is to remember that it’s a journey, not a race. When you shift your perspective, the pressures of achieving your goals become less stressful. Maintaining optimal health and wellness is certainly a journey that has its ups and downs. But as long as you have me as your coach and your teammate, there’s nothing we can’t achieve together.
